Florida Credit Card Debt Is Rising Fast: What Consumers Should Do Now

Posted by Sami Thalji | Mar 25, 2026

Florida families are falling deeper into credit card debt, and that is a serious warning sign.

A report highlighted by Yahoo Finance found that Florida had the third-largest increase in credit card debt in the country from the first quarter of 2025 to the second quarter of 2025. WalletHub's ranking placed Florida behind only California and Texas. The study said the average Florida household's credit card debt rose by about $240, bringing the average household total to about $12,624.

That may not sound like a huge jump at first. But for families already living paycheck to paycheck, another $240 in card debt can be the start of a much bigger problem.

Why this matters for Florida consumers

Credit card debt grows fast.

Interest keeps adding up. Late fees can pile on. A missed payment can hurt your credit. And if the account keeps falling behind, it may be sent to collections or even turned into a lawsuit.

That is why rising debt numbers matter. They usually mean more families are under pressure and more people are getting closer to serious financial trouble.

WalletHub's data shows Florida is not just dealing with high balances. It is also seeing one of the biggest recent increases in the nation. The report said Florida's total credit card debt increase was more than $2 billion in that quarter alone.

The problem is bigger than one monthly bill

According to WalletHub, Americans collectively carry about $1.32 trillion in credit card debt. The report says around $65 billion of that amount came from the prior year alone.

That tells us this is not just a Florida problem. But Florida is clearly feeling the pressure.

When debt rises this quickly, many consumers do the same thing: they try to hold on a little longer, hoping next month will be better. But credit card debt usually does not wait. The balance keeps growing while consumers fall farther behind.

What happens when credit card debt gets out of control?

For many people, the path looks like this:

You miss one payment.
Then the late fee hits.
Then interest grows.
Then the phone calls start.
Then the collection letters come.
Then the risk of a lawsuit gets real.

The biggest mistake is waiting too long to deal with it.

Once a debt is charged off or sent to a collector, things can move quickly. At that point, consumers are often stressed, confused, and unsure of their rights. That is exactly why early action matters.

Florida consumers should not ignore the warning signs

If you are using one card to pay another, only making minimum payments, falling behind on bills, or getting collection calls, those are not small signs. They are signs the debt problem may be getting worse.

And when credit card balances are climbing across the state, it often means more collectors, more lawsuits, and more pressure on working families.

Even though one local report noted that lower interest rates might bring some modest relief for cardholders, modest relief is not the same as real protection when balances are already high.

You may have more rights and options than you think

A lot of people feel trapped when credit card debt starts spinning out of control. But being behind on a debt does not mean you have no rights.

Collectors must still follow the law. Consumers may have defenses. In some cases, the balance may be wrong. In others, the collector may not have the proof needed to collect. And if collectors cross the line, consumers may have legal claims of their own.

That is why it is so important not to wait until the situation gets worse.

Now is the time to act

If your credit card debt is growing, collection calls are starting, or you are worried a lawsuit may be next, now is the time to get legal help.

Debt problems often grow in silence before they explode into a bigger legal and financial mess. The sooner you act, the more options you may have to protect yourself.
